Dogs

D19438 My name is J-Bow-Wow!  I’m a 1-year-old female Pit Bull.  Please come to see me and hear me talk!  If you listen closely, you’ll hear me say my name.  I’m very sweet but I like to talk a lot when I’m in my room here.  Don’t let that stop you from taking me out!

D19445 They call me Frogurt and I’m a 3-year-old male Pit Bull.  I am full of life, love everyone and every kind of dog.  I love to go for walks, play and hug you.  Please come to see me.

D19578 They call me Double D, and I’m a 2-year-old female Pit Bull.  I’m a happy-go-lucky girl who just wants a new family.  I have the cutest face and happiest tail!

D19718 I’m the cutest little guy!  I’m called Marvin and I’m a 3-year-old male Poodle mix.  I have a terrific personality and I love life and all people!  I would do well in any family with anyone.  I’m just perfect!

D19579 I’m called Mya, and I’m a 2-year-old female Pit Bull.  I’m a sweet gal who has been here way too long.  Yeah, I’m a Pit but I’m also so loving and happy.  Please don’t judge me from my looks and breed.

D19687 I have such a nice name, Shiloh, to go with my nice personality.  I’m a 9-month-old male Pit Bull and I may seem a little shy but it’s really that I’m scared to be here in the shelter. When I’m out and comfortable, I’m very happy and playful. The people who found me had kids and I loved them!

D19731 Oh look at my silly face!!!  I’m even cuter in person.  My name is Piggly Wiggly, and I’m a 3-year-old female Pit Bull mix. My personality is just as cute.  I’m so happy and wriggly, hence my name.  I love everyone and I’m a spunky girl!

D19737 Hi!  My name is Mocha and I’m a 1-2 year-old female Pit Bull.   I just sit here quietly and patiently, knowing that not many people look at Pits.  I am a sweet girl, like all the others here.  If there is anyone out there who is looking for a nice Pit Bull to add to your family, I and so many others need you!!

D19711 I’m Yahtzee, a 5-month-old female Pit Bull puppy! I need lots of exercise and a family who will give me attention and love.  I’m a really sweet girl with a great personality!

D19825 I’m a tiny guy named Chato!  I’m a 2-year-old male Chihuahua and I want to be treated like a king!  I love my big blanket pillow and love to be carried around.  But that brings out the Chihuahua in me, if you know what I mean?  Older children only, please.

D19811 Hey, look over here!  I’m Karina, a shy girl.  I’m a 10-month-old female Hound/Shepherd mix.  I’m beginning to feel a little more comfortable here and I’m really happy when I go for walks! I need someone who can show me lots of love and attention.

D19796 Hi, I’m Mellissa!  I’m a 10-month-old female Pit Bull mix.  I’m a sweet young girl.  They say I’m mixed with Rhodesian Ridgeback.  I have this cute little strip of hair down my neck that’s always up (like a Ridgeback).  I have a great personality to go with my cute look!

ARL's Foster Care Program

Do you love older dogs or ones with special needs? So do we! We need YOU!

The ARL is looking to establish a list of a few good homes who would be willing to provide temporary care for

older or special needs dogs while we look for their forever homes. How does it work?
• The ARL pays for vet care, you only need to provide food and toys (and love of course!)
• The ARL will do a home visit and check vet references to ensure that the dog is going into a good environment.
    • If you have one or more dogs, they must come to the shelter to meet the foster dog to ensure that they will get along.

And your dogs must be up-to-date on vaccines and have current licenses.
• Foster homes must have their own transportation, commit to providing the dog with proper vet care and adequate exercise,

and can bring the dog to the shelter when necessary to meet potential adopters.
For anyone interested in this worthwhile and rewarding opportunity, please stop by and fill out a foster home application.
Thank you for caring about those who can't help themselves!

The following dogs are in foster homes (they're not at the shelter), awaiting their

forever homes!  Please call the shelter or email Marcy Tocker at mtocker@berksarl.org

to schedule an appointment to meet them!

D19652  Hey, my name is Yonnie! I am a 5-year-old neutered male Maltese. I am a happy little fellow and I would make a great companion! I get along with other dogs too! I also am doing great with housetraining. I seem to like kids and I love to go for rides in the car!

Please call the shelter to set up an appointment to meet me!

Hey, look at us!!!  We're Sugar and Spice, neutered male Poodles.  We're about 12 years old and are being fostered because our owner had to go into a nursing home. We're very sweet, cuddly and playful, and completely housetrained. We're ready to go into our forever homes.  We can be separated - Sugar is a lap dog and would be wonderful for an older, more sedate person.  And Spice would love to be with another dog - he loves to play.

Please call the shelter and ask for Pam to set up an appointment to meet us.

D19746  Hi, my name is Natasha! I am a 9-year-old Lab/Boxer mix. I am a spayed female. I was adopted a few years ago and then dumped in the ARL stray building. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want me anymore. I'm such a good girl. I have a little bit of an under bite which some people say makes me even cuter :) My last family didn't have time for me anymore, but I hope there is a family out there that does. I get along great with cats and dogs. I am very laid back and I love my belly being rubbed. My foster family says they enjoy taking me for walks because I walk so nicely on my leash. I'm perfect! I hope to see you soon!

Please call the shelter to set up an appointment to meet me!

D19242 I am perfect - really!!!  My name is Sparkles and I’m a 1-year-old spayed female Pit Bull.  I’m super-sweet.  I just love any kind of attention and I want someone to take me and give me a good life.  Please?  I'm housetrained, crate-trained, love kids, and love car rides.  And I really, really want a home with other dogs.  I love to play, play, play!  I also have great obedience skills - I know sit, shake and lay down.

P.S. - I love to have my nails painted.  I'm a girly-girl!

I live with a staff member and lots of other pets.  You can call Trisha at 610-621-6477 or email her at corradochik91@gmail.com to set up an appointment to meet me.

D18325  Hello everyone! My name is Mindy. I am a 7-year-old spayed female Pit Bull. I have come a long way since I first came to the shelter. I was underweight and very scared. My wonderful foster family led me along the way to recovery. I am a healthy, confident little girl now. I consider myself a real "people dog."  I love to go hiking and go for strolls in my neighborhood. I am a real lover and I can be a couch potato if you let me! I'm perfectly housetrained, have great manners and am currently in training for my Canine Good Citizen certification. No cats, please. I know I'm a Pit Bull, but please give me a chance. I have a lot of love to offer! No cats, please.

Please call the shelter to set up an appointment to meet me!

8-23-10 update: I just passed my Canine Good Citizen test and....I also passed the test to be a Certified Pet Therapy Dog!!!

D19659 Introducing, Alfredo! Alfredo is a 6-year-old neutered male Terrier mix. Alfredo is an absolute sweetheart and is the perfect dog for families with children of all ages.  He blends into family life very easy and naturally...he just wants to play, be loved and go for walks.  Alfredo is very even tempered and doesn't require very much to keep him content. He's completely housetrained, great with other pets, and has very good manners!

Please call the shelter to set up an appointment to meet Alfredo!

D19670 Look at me! I’m Kiki, a 6-year-old male Llasa Apso-Poodle mix. When I came into the shelter, I was in desperate need of a haircut. They cleaned me up and look at me now! I’m so happy to be able to run and play, and I’m so loving and thankful. I feel so good with my new haircut. So free and non-restricting! In fact, I love to have my butt scratched and I love attention! I am such a happy, wiggly, funny little guy. I will be a fantastic addition to any lucky family.

Please call the shelter to set up an appointment to meet me!

D19591 Hey all! My name is Vinnie. I am a tiny, 8-year-old neutered male Chihuahua. I'm a big dog trapped in a little dog's body! I love my foster mommy! I get along with other dogs and I'm working on house training. I am a typical Chihuahua, so I am looking for someone who has had experience with my breed because I am tiny, yet mighty. No children please!

Please call the shelter to set up an appointment to meet me!

D19795  Hi there! My name is Nala, a 3-year-old female Pit bull and I am looking for a wonderful family to call my own. I came from a shelter in New York with a litter of puppies who all found homes. I have been waiting patiently for mine now for over a year. Won't someone give me a chance? I am a happy girl with a lot of energy and willing to please. I like to be the "top dog in charge" so I need a home with someone who knows my breed. I listen well to commands and love to snuggle on the couch for some TV time if that is what you want to do. I like to chew - but know what things are mine and what aren't. I have a happy "ear-to-ear" grin most days and really love a good romp in the sun if it's nice out. My foster momma loves me and cares for me but she really wants me to get the one-on-one attention of a forever home.

If you think you might like to be that home, please contact Marcy and let's meet. Sue (staff member) is fostering me so feel free to ask her for more information!

Hey everyone! My name is Lucas. I am a 4-year-old neutered male Labrador mix. My family was going through a divorce and no one wanted me. Can you believe that? I am a portly fellow who is currently on an exercise plan. I am losing a bit of weight, so no worries! I get along with other dogs, but I kind of like to chase cats. If your cat is mellow, I won't chase it though! I live with four cats in my foster home! I love going outside and playing with my foster lab sisters. They are teaching me some good doggie behavior! I am a typical happy Lab. I need a home that will continue to make sure I get exercise to keep me in good health. Like many Labs, I will be your very best friend! Please give me a chance.

Please call the shelter to set up an appointment to meet me!

C40674 They call me Beanie, and I’m a 5-month-old female black and white DSH.  I’m such a sweetheart!  So why am I still here, growing up in a cage? I love all people and I’d love to go to a home while I’m still a youngster!

Fostered Cats

The ARL staff often fosters cats and kittens. There are no foster kittens available now.

Farm Animals

Update 7/26/2010  We are looking for “Angels” to sponsor Sully to help with his feeding and medical expenses.  Sully suffers from COPD and Cushing’s Disease and his health is frail.  The ARL staff and Sully’s veterinarian have decided that it is in Sully’s best interest to live out his remaining days here at the ARL.  If you are interested in becoming an “Angel,” please contact Tracie Graham for more information.  All donations are tax deductible.

Sullivan is a 29-year-old Quarter Horse gelding. Sully had been starved and was over three hundred pounds under weight when the ARL rescued him.  He is steadily gaining weight and his health is improving with each day.  Sully had been used for many years as a children's camp horse.  He has paid his dues and he deserves a loving home where he can just relax and be loved.  Can you open your heart to great horse in need?  Sully is up-to-date on vaccines, de-worming and coggins.  Application and home/barn check required.  If interested, please contact Tracie Graham or Alison Rudy.

"Candy" was confiscated along with two other mares due to violations to PA Animal Cruelty Law.  As you can see, she is very thin and has not been cared for very well in the past.  She is now safe in a foster home and she is gaining weight rapidly.  Candy has been cleared for adoption and is now looking for a new home.  She is very sweet, has good ground manners and she loaded and trailered well.  As soon as she gains enough weight we will evaluate her under saddle.  Candy is a Thoroughbred Mare estimated to be in her mid-teens and she stands approx. 15.2 hands.  Adoption application, home/barn visit and adoption contract required.  If interested please contact Tracie Graham at 610-373-8830.

The ARL wishes to acknowledge Karen O'Neill of Charming Forge Evergreen Farm who has been a tremendous help with our pet llama, Snickers. We thank her for the donations of food she provides for him. We also sincerely thank her for the wealth of information and all of the help she has given us concerning Snickers.
Thank you, Karen!!
