has an easygoing temperment and
be a willing volunteer
( The owner is always close by ,
often face-to-face with their dog to offer support)
is between the ages of 1-7.
is in excellent health
must have a universal blood
type. Your dog will be tested on site to determine if
eligible.
weighs at least 50 lbs.
NO, IF YOUR DOG....
has a serious health condition
has been sick recently
(coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea)
has ever been diagnosed with a
heart murmur
has ever had a seizure
has been vaccinated within 4
weeks
has received medications other
tha n flea, tick or heartworm preventative in the past 2 weeks
has had or will have surgery
within 4 weeks
has ever received a blood
transfusion
has donated blood in the past 6
weeks
is in season, pregnant or will
be bred soon
Tell the blood bank staff about
any concerns you might have.
BENEFITS FOR DOG AND OWNER
The dogs are given a "chocolate
cake" treat after the test.
Their pets are given a health
screening (from their donated blood) that involves about
$300.00 worth of blood tests to guard against infectious
diseases.
Dogs are given free blood equal
to the amount they have given to the blood drive if the need
ever arises. A unit of packed red blood cells costs about
$110.00.
