July 28 - Canine and Human Blood Drive at the ARL

The ARL, in conjunction with Miller–Keystone Blood Center, VCA Sinking Spring Animal Hospital, and The Mathew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania will be holding blood drives for both canines AND humans on July 28th 2009 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the shelter.

The Miller-Keystone Bloodmobile will be at the shelter to process the human donors and the Mathew J. Ryan Bloodmobile will process the canine donors. There will be separate waiting areas for humans and canines and there will be ARL staff on hand to sit with canines while their humans donate.  (Be assured that the staffs of both bloodmobiles will take great care of human and canine donors, and will operate in separate bloodmobiles so there is no possibility of contamination or mixing of human and canine donations.)

If your dog is between the ages of 1 and 6 and weighs between 55 and 150 pounds he/she may be able to be a donor. If you choose to have your dog be a donor, he/she will receive the following: a complete drug screening at no charge to you, one case of canned or one bag of dry Science Diet, and a special gift bag from the bloodmobile staff.

If your dog has a heart murmur or ever had a seizure, has been recently sick or on medication within two weeks of the donation, has been vaccinated or had surgery within four weeks of the donation, or has ever received a blood transfusion, he/she will not be able to donate.

Appointments for canine blood donations can be made by calling Jeannine at VCA Sinking Spring at 610-670-5757 or by email to Hope.Warner@VCAmail.com

To set up appointments for human blood donations, please call 610-926-6060 and ask for Audrey at ext. 1113.
